about the tendo~
in 2013, artist & author jonathan schork sold the house
in the florida keys he'd occupied for more than two decades
and bought an abandoned, wretched house in st.petersburg.
The property was in such an abject state of disrepair that his
new neighbors regarded it as a "bulldozer special", and schork
as a bit of a kook for even thinking about restoration..
What schork saw amidst the garbage & distress
was something else: he found a tabula rasa for an
ambitious renovation project the result of which would be
a home that feels like a synthesis of museum & living sculpture,
with nebulous boundaries between the inside and the
tropical ponds & gardens he created outside.
The home he created presents itself to visitors immediately
as a sanctuary, and a place of immense peace & solace for the
artist. The first word one encounters-- painted on the floor
of the entrance in Japanese kanji-- is "tendo":
